Where  "Much Is Given Much Is Required"

This Week's Featured Video

July 21-27

I can pray to God “vocally and in [my] heart.”

“Thou wilt do the greatest good unto thy fellow beings.”

“Thou wilt do the greatest good unto thy fellow beings.”

D&C 81:3

We may ask, “Why has God seen fit to make it a command that we pray both vocally and in secret?” Obviously, secret prayer is necessary in many cases where it is awkward or infeasible to pray vocally. So, if we are in a social or a business setting and need comfort or direction, a resort to secret prayer is often our only alternative. But a more significant reason for praying secretly is...God has provided a channel of communication between him and his children on earth that Satan, our common enemy, cannot invade. This is the channel of secret prayer.

D&C 82:18-19

As a boy, I remember driving in the car with my father and seeing individuals on the roadside who had found themselves in difficult circumstances or who needed help. My father would always make the comment “Pobrecito,” which means “poor little one.”... Watching these experiences created in me a spirit of compassion toward my fellow men and women and for those in need... Throughout the years, while serving in the Church, I have tried to seek after those who needed help in their lives, both temporally and spiritually.

The Heart of the Gospel: Love God and Neighbor

As we forgive others, God will forgive us

“Thou wilt do the greatest good unto thy fellow beings.”

The Savior has given me much and requires much of me

D&C 82:1-2, 7

In our day the Lord has said...: “Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin. I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men”.… May God help us to be a little kinder, showing forth greater forbearance, to be more forgiving, more willing to walk the second mile, to reach down and lift up those who may have sinned but have brought forth the fruits of repentance, to lay aside old grudges and nurture them no more.

Not one of us wants this journey to be a brief flirtation with spirituality or even a notable but finite chapter. The road of discipleship is not for the spiritually faint of heart...Some ask, “Do I have to be so different from others?” “Can’t I be a disciple of Christ without thinking so much about my behavior?”...“Can’t I love Him and do what I want on Sunday?” Jesus gave a simple answer: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”...as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...we cannot compare what we are to be with those who have not yet received these truths. “Unto whom much is given much is required.”

 D&C 82:8-10

[M]ost blessings that God desires to give us require action on our part—action based on our faith in Jesus Christ...The required action, though, is always tiny when compared to the blessings we ultimately receive. The principle of activating blessings that flow from God is eternal...When you receive any blessing from God, you can conclude that you have complied with an eternal law governing reception of that blessing. But remember that the “irrevocably decreed” law is time insensitive, meaning blessings come on God’s timetable. If a desired blessing from God has not been received—yet—you do not need to go crazy, wondering what more you need to do.

[T]he Savior acted compassionately toward all who would come unto Him—without distinction—and most especially toward those who most needed His help…The compassionate and personalized ministering of Jesus…demonstrates a perfect model of how we should interact with our neighbor.…many people within our circle of influence are seeking comfort, attention, inclusion, and any help that we can offer them. We all can be instruments in the Lord’s hands and act compassionately toward those in need, just as Jesus did…as we intentionally strive to incorporate a compassionate attitude into our way of life...we will become more sensitive to people’s needs.
