Introduction to the Old Testament

The First Testament of Jesus Christ

December 29-January 4

Jesus Christ is Jehovah in the Old Testament

Exodus 3:13-15

Exodus 6:3-5

I testify that the only way we and all mankind can come unto our Heavenly Father and know Him, and thus obtain eternal life, is to come unto the Lord Jesus Christ and know Him...“[Jesus Christ] was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the Messiah of the New. Under the direction of His Father, He was the creator of the earth." …Can we truly and fully comprehend His words? “If ye receive me”—the Great Jehovah, the Messiah, the Creator of the earth, the Savior and Redeemer of the world, the immortal Son of God—“If ye receive me … , then shall ye know me”.

Isaiah 53:3-9

We do not need to labor unsuccessfully…to find our treasure. Nor need we seek counsel from exotic sources, prizing the novelty of the source and thinking such counsel will be more enlightened than that which we can receive from a humble prophet of God.

As recorded in the Old Testament, when Naaman sought a cure for his leprosy, he was indignant at being asked to dip himself seven times in a nearby ordinary river. But he was persuaded to follow the prophet Elisha’s counsel...I encourage you to remember and always focus on Jesus Christ.

We are the focus of Heavenly Father’s plan and the reason for the Savior’s mission

Jeremiah 31:31-34

As covenant children of God, we have been uniquely blessed with a rich supply of divinely appointed tools to improve our spiritual vision...the Savior invites us to see our lives through Him in order to see more of Him in our lives. I’ve come to learn more about this specific invitation through my study of the Old Testament. The law of Moses was given to the early Israelites as a preparatory gospel, designed to ready the people for a higher covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The law, rich with symbolism... was meant to help the people of Israel focus on the Savior by practicing faith in Him, His sacrifice, and His laws and commandments in their lives.

We are the focus of Heavenly Father’s plan and the reason for the Savior’s mission

Moses 1:39

[W]e are the focus of Heavenly Father’s plan and the reason for our Savior’s mission. Each of us, individually, is Their work and Their glory. To me, no book of scripture illustrates this more clearly than has my study of the Old Testament. Chapter after chapter we discover examples of how Heavenly Father and Jehovah are intimately involved in our lives…The Old Testament is packed with miracles and tender mercies that are the hallmark of Heavenly Father’s plan…I testify that this year we can learn more about God’s plan for us in the Old Testament.

My intent is to speak of our sacred and eternal hopes centered in Jesus Christ and the restored gospel...Our hope of eternal life is assured through the grace of Christ and our own choices, allowing us the remarkable blessing of returning to our heavenly home and living forever in peace and happiness with our Heavenly Father, His Beloved Son, [and] our faithful family and precious friends

…the son of my nephew…Trey had heart surgery the first week of his life, and more surgeries followed...and...his faith expanded. He wrote, “I have never felt sorry for myself because I have always known the importance of having faith in Jesus Christ and a testimony of the plan of salvation.”

JST Genesis 14:26-33

“Now these are the words, and ye may liken them unto you and unto all men”. I took that to mean that the scriptures are likened to me personally, and that is true of everyone else…I found these scriptures to be plain and precious…The Book of Mormon confirms the teachings of the Old Testament. It confirms the teachings of the New Testament. It restores “many plain and precious things” lost or taken from them. It is in truth another testament of Jesus Christ…Published in combination, these scriptures form an unshakable testament that Jesus is the Christ and a witness that Joseph Smith is a prophet.
